Different Access Levels in Sharepoint

There are eight levels of permissions available for users and groups in Sharepoint for site level. We discuss each permission level in this article.

The Eight Site Permission Levels are

  • Full Control
  • Design
  • Contribute
  • Manage Hierarchy
  • Read
  • Restricted read
  • View Only
  • Limited Access

By using these access levels we can provide the security to the content in Sharepoint. Here we discuss each access level.

Full Control:

Full Control means exactly what it implies. That means users with this level of permission can do anything granted by the other permission levels, as well as modify permissions.

Design:

The design permission enables users to change the layout of a site, either via a web browser or through office Sharepoint Designer.

Contribute:

The contribute permission allows users to add and change an item or items, depending on the scope of the permission.

Manage Hierarchy:

The manage hierarchy permission gives users the ability to create sites, edit pages, and list items and documents.

Read:

This permission enables users to read the site, page or other item or items where this permission is granted. This allows downloading of files available on the site, so they can be used and/or viewed in their native application.

Restricted read:

Restricted read allows users to view pages and documents, but not the rights assigned to those documents. It does not provide the ability to read any previous revisions to those items. This can be useful for things like organization wide policies and procedures where we want most of user able to access only the current accepted version of these items.

View only:

View only and read permissions may seem like the same thing, but there is one main difference between of the two. That difference is, if a user has only view-only rights to a file, and a server side viewer for the file (such as Excel services) is enabled, the user can only view the file using the server side viewer and cannot work with the file in its native application. This functionality is not limited to Excel only; it applies to Word, PowerPoint and for several other file types also.

Limited Access:

Limited access permissions are automatically assigned by Office Sharepoint Server when you grant a user or group access to an object on your site that is contained in a high-level object to which the user or group does not have access. This permission level cannot be directly assigned to a user or group.
