File Types in Microsoft Office 2016

Microsoft Office files takes advantage of open XML standard to store. In this article we discuss about different file formats of Microsoft Office from initial stages to till Microsoft Office 2016. In Microsoft Office 2016 you can files in older version format also. For example, you can save excel file as .xls which is the Microsoft Office 2003 version format.

File format helps you to identify the type of content specific file contains. For example, .xltm means excel file which has macros installed on it. You can change the file format to previous versions to support your co-workers who are still working with older versions of Microsoft Office applications. Microsoft Office 2016 enables you to save your word document in PDF format so that user who has free Adobe reader can read your document.

You can save your Microsoft documents in older versions. By default, Microsoft Word 2016 document saves with the file extension as .docx, but you can change the file format to older versions while saving by selecting different format in “Save as type” as shown below.

In the same way we can save excel files also in older format as shown below.

You can change the file type for existing files. To change the file type => Open Microsoft Word or Excel document => Go to File => Select Export=> Select Change File Type. Select any file type from available options as shown below.

After selecting file type, click on Save As to save the file in selected format. In Microsoft Word also we can change the file type in the same manner.
